Platycerium willinckii (Java Staghorn) is currently one of the most sought-after staghorn ferns, but on the other hand it is also a very rare species. There are already several cultivars of this with distinct appearances. We have been able to add the willinckii Dwarf Tatsuta to our assortment through our large network of growers of unusual and rare tropical plants.
Characteristics of the Platycerium willinckii Dwarf Tatsuta
This staghorn fern is still extremely rare at present. Because of this, very little information of this distinct houseplant can be found.
Special and compact appearance
Characteristic of this type is the deep inlets of the fertile leaves and the way they have hairs especially on the underside of the fertile leaves. The white hairs protect the plant from drying out in heat and give it its typical appearance. In addition, this type (Dwarf Tatsuta) will stay a bit more compact, but on the other hand, it soon shows deep coves in the fertile leaves (which is, of course, the attraction of this particular variety).
Care of the Platycerium willinckii Dwarf Tatsuta
Care is similar to the Platycerium bifurcatum, but on the other hand, it will need to be placed a bit warmer. The Tatsuta does not appreciate cold temperatures or drafts very easily, so this should be avoided. Tap water does not make this species happy, but rain water this funny little plant loves.
Plant for the beginner
This Platycerium may require a bit more attention, which is why we found that this is more of a plant for someone who has already experimented a bit with deer horn care. However, it is not extremely difficult according to experts.
Origin of this Platycerium fern
This staghorn is originally from the nature of Java, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees, among others. To preserve the species despite possible deforestation or environmental change, initiatives have emerged to propagate and spread the plant in a sustainable way. Bringing a piece of beautiful nature into your home is of course the dream of every tropical plant lover.
The commitment to sustainable and ethical cultivation of the Platycerium willinckii
Although our main goal has always been to preserve and share species through organic and ethical cultivation, unfortunately there are always individuals with not so good intentions. The original source of your ridleyi is a trusted grower in Asia, so we can be sure of the origin of our products. As a result, you can order your beautiful eyecatcher from us with peace of mind and a clear conscience.
Our Platycerium products
When you order a Platycerium willinckii or another species of staghorn fern from us, you may find that the plant is a little small relative to the pot. We do this intentionally to protect the plant during transport. The optimal way to grow and care for this plant species is to mount them on a board or piece of fern wood, with some moss underneath. However, for shipping, this is often not practical. Moreover, many species are imported by pot, so it is not practical to take the plant out of the pot right away. This can be done later if you wish, but it is important to allow the plant to settle in properly first and wait for a positive reaction and growth before taking this step.
